Avoid Sunburn - Avoid Sunspots

Avoid the sun. It can trigger or intensify pigmentation problems, reverse the effect of lightening treatments, and increase your risk of skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. “It’s the most important thing you can do to minimize hyperpigmentation,” says Andrew F. Alexis, M.D., director of the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City.

Don’t pick! As your mother said, leave your skin alone if you have acne, poison ivy, or any other rash. Picking can lead to brown spots and discoloration, not to mention infections.

Stop irritation. If a skin treatment you’re using is causing irritation, stop using it right away or it could make the problem worse. And don’t use lighteners on the sensitive areas around your eyes and eyelids.

Beware of no-name products. You’re likely to be better off with major drugstore brands. Ask your dermatologist for recommendations.

Be patient. It may take several months to see any results from skin-lightening treatments.

See a dermatologist about any odd spots, especially if you notice any that are new, irregularly shaped, or have suddenly changed in size, shape, or color. These can be signs of skin cancer.
